whip it!

i like smart girls...

bliss cavendar (ellen page) is seventeen, works in the oink joint (a pork restaurant) and competes in beauty pageants to make her mother (marcia gay harden) happy. however, bliss is growing up and, after spotting a flyer, heads from her small town to austin, with her friend pash (alia shawkat), and watches the 'hurl scouts' play some roller derby. and, she loves it...

and so, bliss finds herself becoming 'babe ruthless', joining the 'hurl scouts' and mixing it with maggie mayhem (kristen wiig), smashley simpson (drew barrymore), iron maven (juliette lewis) and others...

so, barrymore's directorial debut, based on former roller-derby gal, shauna cross's novel. i heard about this a while ago and was curious to watch, having been a fan of watching red-neck roller derby shows on some dodgy cable tv channel as a youth, but not realising that the world of roller derby had been bubbling along happily around the world. yep, after discovering the existence of the 'leeds roller dolls' and having a quick youtube search, it seems that there's a thriving and ever-growing sub-culture of roller derby girls jamming away around the world. i heartily approve.

as for the movie; well, it's a pretty bog standard coming of age affair, with a roller derby backdrop. still, page, shawcat, barrymore, lewis and strong support, including the film stealing daniel stern, make for an enjoyable enough watch. it's not brilliant, it's not crappy, it's just okay, but nicely put together and watchable as a result.

a bit of fun...

the dvd can be pre-ordered for £10.99 from hmv.com
