defendor

trouble has a way of following me...

arthur poppington (woody harrelson) is being interviewed by dr park (sandra oh), who is trying to get to the bottom of why he smashed up a dry-cleaners and beat up the owner. a man with a troubled past, arthur has a secret, crime-fighting persona: defendor!!! yep, defenr-OR, not defend-ER. and, he's out to stand up for the little man, clean up the streets and get revenge on the evil 'captain industry', who killed his mother...

this is an odd film. it is, in essence, a film about a man who is mentally ill or, at the very least, is severely emotionally disturbed and has developmental issues. and, although there are positive effects to his actions as 'defendor', his ineptitude is, seemingly, played for laughs, which creates a very strange clash of tones within the film. on one hand he is completely delusional, getting badly beaten up and being taken advantage of by a young prostitute, kat (kat dennings), who drains his bank account to buy drugs. then, we can sit back and laugh as defendor uses a jar of wasps to cause a distraction which allows him to escape some hoods or squirts lime juice into the eyes of a crook he is interrogating. strange and slightly jarring...

i wouldn't make any comparisons with 'kick-ass'; they're very different films... although 'super', written and directed by james 'pg-porn' gunn, soundls like it'll sit somewhere in the space between the two of these films. i have quite high hopes for it...

any hoo, back to 'defendor'. err... not a good film. a good performance from woody, but it really does seem to struggle with its tone. not sure i'd recommend it.

you can pre-order the dvd for £8.99 from hmv.com
