web of deception

two joey wangs...

jane (brigitte lin) is a lawyer who is struggling to make a living in hong kong, but is due to emigrate to canada in the very near future. she has cashed in her stocks and shares, resulting her having a large amount of cash at her house, when someone attempts to blackmail her. meanwhile the sister, queenie (joey wong), of jane's secretary, may (pauline wong), is mistaken for her twin sister, catherine (joey wong, again), and is beaten up by a loan shark. desperate times call for desperate measures, and so a web of deception starts to be spun...

or something like that! it would be hard to try and explain the outline of the narrative any further, without minor spoilers or spending about an hour and hundreds of words...

with most of the joy sales "remasters" you should expect that the revised subtitles are going to be riddled with spelling mistakes and other errors; for a company who is selling back catalogue for next to nothing, i suppose they neither have the time or the inclination to make much of an effort. usually, this doesn't really impact on one's enjoyment of the film, as they're good enough. here, however, the poor quality and lack of subtitles for several signs, notes and other non-spoken text is a bit of a drag...

despite this, the film is a pretty enjoyable watch, even if you're thinking about how much better it could be, if it had decent subs. brigitte lin is ace and having two joey wongs - not quite a good twin / evil twin scenario, but close - is quite good fun. oh, and i always like to see waise lee cropping up.

the plot and atmosphere work to create a thriller, which manages to create moments of tension and unease, whilst it goes on its path. sure, there's a few clunky moments, but my overall impression was that a better set of subs would have made the film much more engaging.

okay, but let down by joy sales...

the dvd is hk$35 from buyoyo.com
